Britain's #1 exporter and Europe's largest defense
company, British Aerospace (BAe) is also involved in
civil aviation, automobiles (Rover), construction and
civil engineering (Netherlands-based Ballast Nedam),
and property development (Arlington Securities). BAe is
a 20% partner in Airbus Industrie, designing and
building wings for the European aerospace consortium.
Bae was formed in 1960 when the British Parliment
attempted to save the UK's Aviation Industry by merging
Hawker-Siddley Aviation and British Aircraft
Corporation (BAC). Hawker-Siddeley has roots in the
aviation industry as far back as 1910 and attained fame
in the 1960s for developing the Harrier fighter. BAC
also has roots back to about 1910 and was
Aerospatiale's partner in developing the supersonic
Concorde.
